Random Basketball News Roundup 5.22.13

Coming

  •  The San Antonio Spurs took a 2-0 lead over the Memphis Grizzlies. Die-hard Grizzlies fans are thinking that they have the Spurs right where they want them after previous series comebacks. (Back in reality, it is not looking good for the Grizzlies, but I guess anything is possible- I mean one day there might actually be Grizzly Bears in Memphis, TN right?)
  • The Hornets name is attempting a comeback in Charlotte for the 2014-’15 season. (As a NC native I loved the Grandmama Hornets of the ’90s.)

GoingDeuce Bigalow

  • Vinny Del Negro will not return to the Los Angeles Clippers despite setting a franchise record with 56 wins (and no Subway/GameFly/Kia ads.)
  • Deuce Bello is tranferring to Mizzou from Baylor. (Please tell me he is related to or named for Deuce Bigalow)
  • Tarik Black has transferred to Kansas from Memphis. (Tarik, you’re not in Kans…oh wait- yes you are.)
  • Brandon Bolden has transferred to Kansas State from Georgetown. (Bolden completed his secondary education at one of my favorite all-time school names: Quality Education Academy)
  • Martin Breunig has transferred to Montana from Washington. (Breunig is from Germany. Apparently he is not majoring in geography. Yes, I am warm-weather biased.)
  • Sheldon Jeter apparently wants to transfer to Pitt from Vanderbilt, but Vandy allegedly has blocked it. (Maybe Vandy Coach Kevin Stallings was joking. Then I asked myself, Have you ever seen Kevin Stallings joke?)
  • Lasan Kromah has transferred to UConn from George Washington. (UConn Assistant Karl Hobbs used to be the head coach at George Washington and apparently left a trail of bread crumbs from DC to Storrs)
  • Yemi Makanjuola has transferred to UNC Wilmington from Tennessee. (Is this a “player to be named later” deal? John Fields transferred from UNCW to UT in 2010).
  • Mailk Smith has transferred to Minnesota from Florida International. (Coach Richard Pitino left FIU to go to Minnesota …bread crumbs 2, new guys 0)

Staying

  • Stan Van Gundy apparently has removed himself from consideration from NBA head coaching jobs. (I want to make a mustache joke or something, but I really like all the Van Gundys.)
