Hi Coach,

Recently started listening to your podcasts. Thanks for opening this avenue for sharing and helping me get better as a coach. I am the heard girls coach at my high school and really need to help our middle school/junior high programs improve their ability to develop basic skills in our incoming girls. I’d love any thoughts on how to help a couple of overwhelmed (three coaches for about 35 girls) couches be most effective in skill development above all other things while still keeping their players interest.

Thanks

Coach Allen- Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I was out of commission on the website after my daughter was born. For skill development at the age you coach I like to devote roughly the first 25% of practice to skill development every day. We have a series of dribbling, passing, footwork, and shooting drills that we do every day. Everyone gets a partner. One set of partners does shooting drills on the goals (we have 6 in our gym). The other set of partners does ball-handling and passing drills in the center of the court at the same time. After about 7 minutes we switch. It takes us 15 minutes to do our routine every day. After that we do team based skill activities like 3 on 2, 2 on1, a shooting-on-the-move drill, etc. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you more questions. Coach ‘em up! Hal Wilson

I am 24 year old aspiring basketball coach. I’m very passionate about coaching and helping out at my old high school as a manager and volunteer coach for about 8 years. I would like to eventually like to coach at the collegiate level and professionally. I love were I am at but I do not know how how to get to the next level. Do you have any tips or advice that could help me with my coaching progression? Thanks in advance for the help.

Coach- thanks for the note! In every podcast I ask coaches≤ for their advice in this area. Based on my own experience and their comments my advice in a nutshell is 1. Keep that enthusiasm and passion for the game- never stop learning! 2. Connect with as many coaches as you can however you can- work camps, go to clinics, write, etc. 3. Be willing to work anywhere for no money, & 4. Don’t let “No” stop you- keep fighting for your dream through the tough times because we all have tough times. Good luck! Hal

Nice Website!

Always good to connect with coaches and leaders who are interested in helping people improve.

I have coaches for nearly 20 years, and also provide team building and speaking events based upon the team leadership lessons that those experiences have provided… looking forward to learning from (and sharing with) you in the future!
